With more and more children interested in participating in sports, a new specialty in medicine called primary care sports medicine, now focuses on keeping these athletes healthy. Our sports medicine clinic now offers immediate counseling and treatment in the following areas: Overuse Injuries Children, because of their open growth plates and apophysis, have risks of developing different overuse injuries then adults. A pediatric sports medicine specialist can quickly identify and help to prevent these injuries. Some overuse injuries in children include os good-schlatter (better known as jumpers knee), Severs disease (injury to the growth plate in the heel), and Little League Elbow (inflammation of the inside of the elbow). The Female Athlete Increased exercise loads, stress, and pressures to maintain an ideal body type-thin or prepubescent can result in what is known as the female athlete triad. The female athlete triad includes disordered eating, amenorrhea (absence of periods at sufficient intervals >7 year), and osteoporosis. The goal in treatment for the female athleteis to prevent osteoporosis, stress fractures and possible infertility as an adult. This goal is best met by maintaining ideal body weight. Nutritional Supplements Our clinic can provide education and or counseling on the risks and benefits of using nutritional supplements. Popular supplements today include creatine (most prevalent), androstenedione, glucosamine, chondroitin, oral rehydration beverages (Powerade, Gatorade), and amino acid supplements. Respiratory Problems in Athletes Two disease processes can lead to shortness of breath, chest tightness, or cough with exercise. They include exercise-induced asthma and vocal cord dysfunction. If improperly diagnosed, impairment of performance can result. Although the symptoms are similar, the treatment is quite different for each disease entity. Our clinic can help with the diagnosis and treatment of each of these problems. If you have any questions regarding any of these topics or how to insure your childs safe participation in sports, please contact us at 410.337.7900.
