March marked the beginning of a year long effort to promote youth safety in our community, stressing the importance of certified athletic trainers in the athletic community. Throughout the year, athletic trainers from Towson Sports Medicine will be hosting monthly events at Baltimore area schools, recreation centers, playgrounds, and health centers.

Sports participation has become a major cause of serious injury among youth. Sports activities are the second most frequent cause of injury for both male and female adolescents.

Each year it is estimated that more than five million children seek treatment in hospital emergency rooms because of sports injuries. Most of these injuries are preventable. It is the goal of Towson Sports Medicine to help raise awareness of injury prevention and reduce the number and severity of injuries to children in the Baltimore area.

Towson Sports Medicine and The Womens Sports Medicine Center at Orthopaedic Associates are offering a 4 week ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) Injury Prevention Program this summer. Female athletes ranging from 12 years to 22 years are welcome.

The program will consist of strength, flexibility, plyometric (power), and cardiovascular exercises. Drills that emphasize pivoting and landing will also be addressed.

Improper pivoting and landing is a major contributor to ACL tears.

The cost of this program is $150 per session. We are offering two sessions this summer.

Session one:
June 18, 2002 through July 9, 2002.

Session two:
July 16, 2002 through August 6, 2002

The program will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Towson University. Please call for scheduled times.

For more information or to sign up, please call Lindsey Nadeau, ATC, CSCS, at 410-337-5310.

ACL tears occur in 1 of 100 female high school athletes and in 1 of 10 female college athletes. The risk of an ACL tear is 7-8 times greater in females than in males.
