A Nurse Practitioner is a registered nurse (RN) who has advanced education and clinical training in a health care specialty area. Nurse Practitioners work with people of all ages and their families, providing information people need to make informed decisions about their health care and lifestyles choices. Nurse Practitioners practice under the rules and regulations of the Nurse Practice Act of the state in which they work. Most nurse practitioners are also nationally certified in their specialty area. They are recognized as expert health care providers. Nurse Practitioners may be found in all 50 states. In order to provide complete health care, Nurse Practitioners: - Obtain medical histories and perform physical examinations - Diagnose and treat acute health problems such as infections and injuries - Diagnose, treat and monitor chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure - Prescribe medications and other treatments - Provide health maintenance care for adults, including annual physicals - Promote positive health behaviors and self-care skills through education and counseling - Collaborate with physicians and other health professional as needed Back to top Nurse Practitioners Kathy Mulford received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Maryland. She completed her post graduate nurse practitioner education at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. Prior to joining Orthopaedic Associates, Kathy worked as a nurse practitioner in a private internal medicine practice in Towson. She has more than twenty years experience in emergency nursing and nursing education. She is certified as an Adult Nurse Practitioner and works primarily with spine problems and general orthopaedics. Back to top Mary Jo Holloran graduated in 1980 from the St. Joseph Medical Center School of Nursing. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at George Mason University in Virginia, and her nurse practitioner training at the College of Notre Dame. She holds a Master of Science degree in Health Care Administration from Towson University. Mary Jo Holloran is a certified Adult Nurse Practitioner, and specializes in general orthopaedics.
